What is Digital Accessibility and why is it important?
We all create and change digital content, but are we confident it’s accessible for our clients? As more and more of our work is hosted and shared online, it has never been more important to make sure it is accessible to as many clients and colleagues as possible.
Digital Accessibility is creating content that can be easily understood and interacted with by as many people as possible.
- Writing in a way that is easy to understand.
- Subtitles on videos.
- Using features that help assistive technology work effectively.
- Making sure colour is not the only way of understanding something.
Because it is so important, this training is now mandatory for all public sector bodies but should be standard practice for all entrepreneurs and organizations large and small.
The problem with 'click here'
Hyperlinks, colour contrast, subtitles – all these things can make a huge difference to the person you’re trying to engage and they’re easily improved.
Links, or hyperlinks, are a very common feature in documents and online. They provide quick navigation from one page to another and save the user a lot of time but sometimes, poorly written links can cause several accessibility issues to some users.
However, poorly written links can cause several accessibility issues to some users. Vague links such as ‘click here’ or ‘see here’ offer little explanation about the destination the link will direct the user; long links can be frustrating for screen reader users as links are read out letter by letter and links that aren’t a different colour or underlined can be indistinguishable from normal text.
Therefore, when creating links, it's best to get in the habit of writing short descriptive links whenever possible or use shortened URL’s to improve user experience.
