Rob is a designer, dad of three, and the chap behind the English Cyclist. He designs and delivers a range of infographics, maps, and art prints aimed at cyclists. Along with his wife, Sarah, they run the business entirely from home.
Things started out in the misty rolling hills of East Yorkshire where Rob grew up - cycling was a necessary mode of transport as he lived 5 miles from the local town and had to go there to see his mates! Since then, he’s developed a passion for cycling, which meshed with his graphic design training in 2013. When the Tour de France came over Holme Moss, Rob created his first print. A work colleague mentioned he should pop it on Etsy, he did, and started delivering prints to people all around the country.
Rob joined the ScaleUp 360 project in the spring of 2020 when he was under a fair amount of pressure. Covid wasn’t great for a lot of businesses but for English Cyclist it was the opposite. Rob was creaking at the seams trying to keep on top of things and needed some guidance on what to do next. What had started out in 2013 as a side hustle for some extra pocket money was turning into a “proper” business. He had to get himself, and the business, streamlined.
“Abigail at ScaleUp 360 helped me get some essential advice, focus and looking back – helped prepare for a record-breaking year. I’m really glad we did all that preparation as it’s been a completely bonkers year. We have surpassed all our ‘it would be nice if’ forecasts, dipped our toes into hiring our first temp staff, brought on a marketing agency to help continue the growth, hired an accountant, and incorporated as a limited company. “
Rob also managed at some point to create a great new product: their map print designer. It’s aimed at cyclists, but anyone with a GPX of a run or adventure can use it. It allows people to create map prints of their best rides, runs and adventures. It’s proving a hit. Launched in August, it’s already his top selling product. With loads of features in the pipeline to improve it next year too it seems that English Cyclist is going from strength to strength.
